Dietary restrictions

Hard and sticky foods put excessive strain on the brace system. This can lead to damage to the brackets or archwire and prolong the treatment time.

Which products should be excluded:

  • Nuts, seeds, brittle.
  • Hard candies, lollipops, nougat.
  • Crusty bread, crackers, crispbreads.
  • Chips, snacks, dried fruits.
  • Whole apples and carrots.
  • Chewing gum and sticky sweets.

Temperature Restrictions

In the initial months after receiving braces, the temperature of food and drinks impacts the performance of the orthodontic system. Cold items can diminish the effectiveness of the treatment.

What to avoid:

  • Cold drinks.
  • Ice cream.
  • Very cold food straight from the fridge.
  • Sharp temperature changes.

Daily hygiene

When wearing braces, plaque accumulates quickly around the brackets. Without careful hygiene, this can lead to cavities and gum inflammation.

Basic care rules:

  • Brush your teeth after every meal.
  • Do not leave food residues around the braces.
  • If you don’t have a toothbrush, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.

Care Products

A regular toothbrush is not enough for effective cleaning of a brace system. An additional set of tools is required.

What should be used daily:

  • Toothbrush.
  • Toothpaste.
  • Orthodontic interdental brushes.
  • Dental floss.
  • Irrigator

Evening cleaning

The evening cleaning is the most important stage in caring for teeth with braces. It helps to remove the plaque that has built up throughout the day.

What to pay attention to:

  • Make sure to brush your teeth before bed.
  • Thoroughly clean the area around each lock.
  • Pay attention to the cervical area.

Choosing a Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Incorrectly selected products may damage braces or tooth enamel.

Recommendations

  • a regular or electric toothbrush without silicone attachments can be used;
  • an orthodontic toothbrush with a cut-out is allowed;
  • toothpaste — any except whitening toothpaste.

If a Bracket Breaks or Comes Off

Damage to a bracket is not an emergency situation, but it requires a doctor’s examination.

How to Act

  • do not try to glue the bracket yourself;
  • schedule the nearest appointment;
  • wait for the bracket to be fixed in the clinic.

If the Archwire Hurts or Causes Discomfort

During tooth movement, the archwire may shift and cause discomfort.

What to Do

  • schedule an examination;
  • the doctor will shorten the archwire;
  • after correction, the discomfort disappears.

Pain After Installation or Adjustment

Pain in the teeth is a normal reaction to the beginning or adjustment of orthodontic treatment.

How to Relieve the Condition

  • pain is possible during the first 3–4 days;
  • regular painkillers are allowed;
  • do not take medications containing nimesulide.

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding during brushing is a sign of insufficient hygiene and plaque accumulation.

What to Change

  • brush your teeth more thoroughly;
  • do not avoid the area near the gums;
  • do not be afraid of light pressure with the toothbrush.

Irritation of the Lips or Cheeks

At the beginning of wearing braces, the mucous membrane adapts to the new construction.

How to Reduce Discomfort

  • use orthodontic food-grade wax;
  • apply wax only when needed;
  • do not use it constantly.
