Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the mouth causes pain, burning, ulcers, discomfort when eating and worsens general well-being. This condition is called stomatitis and it can occur in both children and adults. In children, it is often accompanied by refusal to eat and crankiness, in adults - a decrease in performance. And without timely treatment, the disease can grow into a chronic form and cause complications.
Treatment of stomatitis
Causes of stomatitis
Stomatitis in adults and children is not an independent disease, and often acts as a symptom of other disorders or a reaction to external stimuli. The cause of stomatitis can be:
- Infections. Bacterial (e.g., staphylococci, streptococci), viral, primarily herpes virus, fungal (most commonly candidiasis, especially in children and the elderly).
- Mechanical injuries. Bites of the mucosa, damage with a toothbrush, sharp edges of fillings or teeth, poor-quality dentures
- Allergic reactions. Sometimes stomatitis occurs as a reaction to products, medicines, hygiene products or materials of dental constructions.
- Decreased immunity. Stomatitis can occur in weakened patients, after diseases, with avitaminosis or stress, when the immune system is severely weakened.
- Hormonal changes and systemic diseases. For example, with diabetes, anemia, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Poor oral hygiene. Bacteria or viruses, more easily penetrate the mucosa, provoking inflammation.

What is stomatitis?
Stomatitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, manifested as redness, swelling, painful ulcers or erosions. It can occur in people of any age and is often associated with infections, injuries, allergies or reduced immunity.
Depending on the symptomatology and the provoking factor, several forms of stomatitis are distinguished:
- Candidiasis stomatitis (or fungal) – inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa caused by fungi of the genus Candida, accompanied by white plaque and burning.
- Allergic – occurs as a reaction to drugs, food, denture materials, etc.
- Ulcerative – deeper lesions of the oral mucosa, often accompanied by general weakness and bad breath.
The main symptoms of stomatitis
Stomatitis usually develops quickly – within 1-2 days after exposure to the provoking factor. At first there is a feeling of discomfort or burning in the mouth, followed by pain, redness, swelling and ulcerations. Depending on the form and degree of damage, symptoms may be mild or pronounced, and in advanced cases – affecting the general well-being.
Typical symptoms of stomatitis:
- pain and burning sensation in the oral cavity;
- formation of ulcers or redness on the mucosa;
- swelling and hyperemia (redness) of the mucosa;
- ulcers that react painfully to sour, salty, sweet, hot, or cold;
- pooled ulcerated areas with plaque and a sharp deterioration in well-being;
- difficulty eating, speaking, and swallowing.
With different types of stomatitis, the clinical manifestations may differ. For example, in the case of stomatitis of fungal origin, a white plaque is noticeable in the mouth.
Chronic stomatitis may be less pronounced, but often recurring. Symptoms periodically exacerbate, especially when the body’s defenses are reduced during another disease or against a background of stress. Chronic type of inflammation requires a systematic approach to treatment.
Treatment of stomatitis in adults and children
In order to correctly diagnose and prescribe treatment, it is initially necessary to determine the cause of inflammation. It is important not just to relieve symptoms, but to eliminate the factor that caused the disease to prevent recurrences and transition to a chronic form.
Diagnosis of stomatitis includes:
- visual inspection of the oral cavity;
- collection of anamnesis: clarification of complaints, lifestyle, diet, concomitant diseases;
- if necessary – the appointment of additional tests (smear for microflora, blood tests, tests for infections, allergies, etc.).
Treatment methods for stomatitis are personalized, but basic principles include the following:
- Diet. Eating only warm food, without pungent spices, acid, salt and irritating foods. This reduces pain sensations and accelerates the healing of ulcers.
- Elimination of the cause, due to which stomatitis is caused in a particular patient. It is necessary to remove traumatizing factors (sharp edges of teeth or dentures), infections, treat allergic reactions.
- Professional oral hygiene. In the treatment of stomatitis, an important role is played by the removal of plaque and stone, sanitation of foci of infection and compliance with home hygiene.
- Oral care. The use of gentle hygiene products, refusal of aggressive rinses, regular brushing with a soft brush.
In addition, the key attention is paid to drug therapy to remove symptoms and eliminate the cause of inflammation of the mucosa. The dentist can prescribe:
- Antiseptics – for rinses and compresses on the affected area.
- Anti-inflammatory drugs – to relieve pain, redness and swelling.
- Antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal drugs – selected depending on the cause of pathology, if infectious stomatitis is diagnosed.
- Antihistamines – used for allergic origin of stomatitis.
- Immunomodulators – used in frequent relapses or decreased immunity and only by indication.
- Analgesics – in the form of gels or solutions for topical application.
Also useful can be a mouthwash with decoctions of herbs, but use them only if prescribed by a doctor.
In addition, treatment of chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, normalization of nutrition, vitamin intake (especially B and C), strengthening immune protection, depending on what caused inflammation of the oral mucosa may be prescribed.
Comprehensive therapy of stomatitis helps not only to eliminate symptoms, but also significantly reduce the risk of recurrence of the disease.
Prevention of stomatitis
Preventive measures are especially important for people with weakened immunity, chronic diseases or a tendency to allergic reactions. Regular oral care and attentive attitude to health help to avoid inflammation of the mucosa and recurrences of the disease.
The main preventive measures:
- use only individual hygiene products – toothbrushes, towels, pastes;
- follow a healthy lifestyle and the rules of a balanced diet rich in vitamins (especially A, C, B group);
- refuse smoking and frequent alcohol consumption, as they irritate the mucosa;
- at the first signs of discomfort or inflammation, visit a dentist – self-treatment can aggravate the situation;
- if you are prone to allergies, avoid contact with potential allergens (certain foods, medicines, care products);
- have regular preventive check-ups with your dentist – at least once every 6 months;
- maintain a high level of oral hygiene, especially after meals and before bedtime;
- treat cavities and gum disease in a timely manner to exclude foci of infection;
- avoid mechanical trauma to the mucosa (e.g. biting the cheek, careless flossing).
It is also important to treat any diseases in time to avoid weakening the immune system.
Following these recommendations significantly reduces the risk of developing both acute and chronic stomatitis in adults and children.
